Porcelain is named after its resemblance to polished shells. It used to be known as ‘white gold’ because its whiteness was a secret that made it scarcer and more precious than gold. In fact, porcelains’s whiteness is due to its very high china clay content.

Mia uses porcelain clay made with the best quality raw materials, sourced from around the world and mixed in Stoke-on-Trent. her ceramics have a high degree of translucency- place near a sunny window or shine a light or candle inside to reveal this special property. Porcelain has a fine appearance but is also very strong and durable, making it dishwasher safe and perfect for daily use.

Mia hand makes each ceramic by throwing on the potter’s wheel and then painting each individually with freehand brushwork. There are no moulds or transfers used, simply skillful hand making. As a result, each piece is unique, with its own tiny quirks and imperfections.

Mia began working with ceramics in 1991, spending an initial seven years as an artist for a company specialising in English Delftware reproductions. She then moved into designing and making her own work, spending time learning and working with other potters. Following a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship (QEST scholarship) in 2004, Mia has worked exclusively with porcelain.

Over the years, Mia has had notable achievements. She was a Craftsman Highly Commended Newcomer at The British Craft Trade Fair in 2003 and featured in July 2003 and 2004 magazines.

Internationally, Mia showed work at Shanghai Design Week 2014 and has recently acquired new stockists in USA and Europe. She has exhibited in heart of London’s Design District at Designed-Crafted in 2014 and 2015 for London Design Week, and at the Mall Galleries with the Society of Designer Craftsmen in 2015.
