Flora McLachlan studied at Brighton College and then went to Oxford University to study English 1994-97. She returned to art and in 1999 took a Professional Development Diploma in Illustration at West Herts College, Watford. In January 2008 she was elected as an Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). Flora McLachlan is inspired by poetry and the powerful and strange images found in fairy tales and myths. She has had several exhibitions, both solo shows and mixed exhibitions.

Flora’s preferred technique is etching. “I love its atmosphere, the deep mysterious blacks and the glowing whites. During the long etching process, my original idea changes, and grows, with the working of the metal. The act of creation continues with the printing of the image; many of my etchings are underprinted with a painterly mono-collagraph plate, and most are complex and demand a concentrated and meditative approach to the inking and printing.”

Her pictures are records of things seen and imagined by twilight or moonglow. She takes inspiration from her studies of English literature, myth and legend and tries to express a sense of the enchantment she feels is embedded in our ancient landscape. Flowers gleam in dark woods or misty meadows and moths are drawn to them; clouds cross the sky and a fox hurries over a hill.
‘Flora McLachlan’s etchings and paintings have an unforgettable presence, infused with a haunting sense of poetry. Her work is carefully structured, where echoes of form build distinctive compositions, enriched by her use of patterns from the natural world.
