After writing about Exmoor and West Somerset for upwards of forty years, Peter Hesp turned from making word pictures to painting the landscape he loves.

He has sketched and painted all his life – just for fun – and in the 1950’s enjoyed illustrating his regular signed columns in the Somerset County Gazette with pen and ink drawings. But it is only since retiring from journalism in 1991 that he has eagerly taken up painting as a full time occupation.

Using mainly soft pastels (occasionally on a water colour or ink base) he delights in painting the wild scenery of Exmoor’s river valleys and spectacular coastal cliffs. Equally challenging to the artist are Selworthy’s picturesque thatched cottages.
