Sarah Raphael Balmeā€™s paintings depict a dreamlike world of vibrant colours and symbolism. A myriad of creatures and figures from another time inhabit a world of opulent interiors and wild gardens bursting with life. Her paintings have a sense of narrative reminiscent of folk art, depicting a captivating world of storytelling and mystery.
Raphael Balme draws from an eclectic range of influences in her work. Bright boldly patterned Indian textiles, the long-forgotten inhabitants of 18th century portraits, Milagros folk charms and unusual objects all appear in her work, creating a visual language that is both original and beautiful.
She studied at Chelsea College of Art and has exhibited widely across the UK both in solo and group exhibitions, including exhibitions in London and New York. In 2019 she was commissioned by interiors brand House of Hackney to make a series of paintings to accompany their new ‘The Magic of Nature: Part I’ collection.
