PEGGY LOCK

Peggy Lock was brought up on the south coast of England. She studied Fine Art and Printed Textile Design at Portsmouth College of Art in the sixties. As a student she won a prestigious award from the Cotton Board for a textile design which was put into production by David Whitehead and featured in House and Garden magazine.

After leaving college she spent a ‘gap year’ in New York. She returned to the UK and embarked on a teaching career which lasted nearly forty years. Passion and enthusiasm for the subject did not diminish during this time, indeed it increased. One of her favourite quotes is ‘ideas come from work not work from ideas’, which is perhaps the ethos of her current methodology.

Now retired from teaching she is able to concentrate on her own work. As a lifetime collector of domestic artefacts and ephemera which are imbued with memory, Peggy’s work combines this with an eclectic mix of interests and experiences. Finding shards of blue and white china spilling from a Victorian midden on to the beach at the age of eight was a joy, she still delights in finding old pottery shards in the garden!

She is currently working on a series of still-lifes of blue and white china. Her work has a fresh contemporary quality and a strong sense of decorative design. Two and three dimensions are deliberately ambiguous to draw the viewer in and evoke memories and feelings.

Peggy’s work has been shown across the UK and is becoming very sought after. She has undertaken a number of commissioned pieces and has work in many private collections.
