Born in 1957, Malcolm studied graphic design and illustration at the Somerset College of Art and lives and works in Bath. His paintings express his lifelong fascination with the landscapes of the South West and Wales. Starting with drawings from observation, he allows his memory to guide his process, resulting in an effortless shift between figurative and abstract in each painting. A skilled colourist, his work displays a luminosity and delicacy of colour that evokes the atmosphere, scale, and nuances of seasonal light in the landscape.
“The effects of light and weather on landscape fascinate me. I am not a great traveller and find beauty in that which lies on my doorstep. Painting has been, and I hope will always be, the great passion of my life.’
Malcolm has exhibited widely across the UK in solo and group exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Threadneedle Prize, the Derwent Drawing Prize, the Royal Watercolour Society Competition, the Black Swan Open and the Millfield Open, Somerset
He is an academician at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), and a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the Bath Society of Artists, and has work is in several permanent collections including the Wessex Collection, Longleat House, the Victoria Gallery, Bath and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
