The Book of the Raven: Corvids in Art
The Book of the Raven: Corvids in Art
“Shapeshifter, mischief-maker, trickster, clown…Ravens certainly are multi-talented birds.” Conceived, art directed and designed by Angus Hyland, The Book of The Raven is a collection of artworks created by some of the world’s leading artists, photographers and illustrators. Corvids play an outsize role in the human imagination. We keep ravens in towers, emblazon rooks on banners, find crows in the constellations and make sure we salute solitary magpies. We also see our own behaviour mirrored in this diverse family of birds, who are tricksters and thieves as well as problem-solvers and gift-givers. Written by Caroline Roberts, The Book of the Raven showcases the visual and literary life of the corvid, from Norse legends to Game of Thrones, Shakespeare to Poe, Hughes and beyond. The book also examines some of the more unusual behavioural traits such as gift-giving, puzzle-solving and facial recognition displayed by these intelligent birds. It includes hundreds of beautiful photographs, illustrations and paintings and accompanying texts and poems. The book has an introduction by Chris Skaife, the current Ravenmaster at the Tower of London, in which he fondly describes his love affair with these intelligent birds. Designed to appeal to anyone who loves art and is fascinated by these black birds, it is the latest in the series, which includes The Book of the DogThe Book of the BirdThe Book of the Cat and The Book of the Horse.   Author: Angus Hyland Paperback, 153 pages Illustrated throughout in colour

The Printmakers Cat
The Printmakers Cat
Captured on the pages of this, a new version of a highly original book are 330 etchings, engravings, woodblocks, linocuts, silkscreen, collagraphs and lithography from 56 UK printmakers. All feature cats as the dominant or significant subject. Many are witty or whimsical; some bold, others subtle. Most depict aspects of feline behaviour that will be familiar to those who share their homes with cats. The artists themselves include in these pages their experiences and anecdotes. They also attempt to explain what it is that makes the domestic cat such a popular subject in printmaking. Leonardo da Vinci probably got it right nearly five centuries ago when he said that “the smallest feline is a masterpiece”. His view of the larger cat wasn’t recorded. A whale off the coast of Norway and other encounters by Alexander Voitsekhovsky
A whale off the coast of Norway and other encounters by Alexander Voitsekhovsky

Alexander Voitsekhovsky was born in Moscow but grew up in Leningrad in the 1960s and 70s. Like many of his family he studied medicine, and eventually started working as a doctor in the emergency services in St Petersburg. He started to draw as a student – at lectures, on the train, in shop queues. In 1994, without his knowledge, Alexander’s friends gathered together the pictures he’d given them over the years, framed them, transferred the commentaries he’d written on the back to labels, and hung them in a gallery in St Petersburg.
They then had an opening to which they invited everyone they knew – including the artist.
